Multi-threaded NewsWatcher
==========================
by
Simon Fraser
based on the NewsWatcher code, by John Norstad
What it is
----------
Multi-threaded NewsWatcher (or MT-NewsWatcher for short) is a
Usenet News reader for the Macintosh, for users with direct TCP/IP
Internet connections (including SLIP & PPP users).
MT-NewsWatcher addes to NewsWatcher some of those features that
Nuntius users have had for a long while, most notably multi-threading.
In this context, multi-threading refers to the ability of the application
to perform several concurrent tasks (e.g. download articles from several
groups simultaneously), rather than the threading of news articles. These
improvements are detailed in the next section.
System Requirements
-------------------
MT-NewsWatcher requires a Macintosh with a 68020 or better, or PowerPC
processor, running System 7.0 or later with the Thread Manager installed
(7.5.5 preferred) with 2.5 megabytes or more of memory and a hard drive.
The Mac must be connected to the Internet, and MacTCP or Open Transport
must be properly installed and configured.
MT-NewsWatcher also requires the Thread Manager, which can be installed
as an extension under System 7.x, and is included in 7.5 and above.
This version of MT-NewsWatcher is distributed as a fat binary, so will
run well on both 68k and PPC machines.
Read the accompanying documents for information about use Speech Recognition
and the Words Services suite with MT-NewsWatcher.
Improvements over NewsWatcher
-----------------------------
* Multi-threading -- download articles from several groups simultaneously,
or have several binary extractions going on at the same time!
* Auto-opening of group files in the specified folder on startup.
* Progress bars on most operations
* Beautification of the interface, and more...
See the documentation at

for more information.
Distribution
------------
Multi-threaded NewsWatcher is free. It may not be sold for profit
or included with other software, products, publications, or services
which are sold for profit without the permission of Simon Fraser, but
otherwise you should feel free to use it and redistribute it.
Bug reports &c
--------------
Please report all bugs to Simon Fraser, <smfr@santafe.edu>,
and include details of your machine configuration, system version,
networking software, and a detailed description of what you do to
trigger the bug.
